Overview of Seaports in China
China has over 30 major seaports along with a vast system of smaller ports distributed along the coastline from North to South. There are also ports located inland, such as Nanjing, Guangzhou, and Foshan.
Shanghai Port
Shanghai Port, located near the city of Shanghai, includes both a deep-sea port and a river port. With its convenient geographical location and large scale, Shanghai Port has become one of the largest and most important seaports in China. In 2010, Shanghai Port surpassed Singapore to become the busiest container port in the world, handling 29.05 million TEUs, significantly exceeding Singapore's half a million TEUs. This showcases the growth and strength of Shanghai Port in international transportation and trade. Shanghai Port boasts modern infrastructure and diverse cargo transportation facilities. In addition to the container port, it has bulk cargo terminals, liquid cargo terminals, and an adjacent airport, facilitating convenient transportation activities and connections to other regions within and outside China.
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port
Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is one of the busiest seaports globally with enormous cargo throughput. Situated in Ningbo and Zhoushan on the East China Sea coast, it strategically lies at the intersection of domestic and coastal shipping routes. In 2015, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port processed a total of 888.96 million tons of cargo, showcasing its scale and efficiency in handling goods. The port is highly praised for its infrastructure and cargo transportation facilities, including storage areas, container yards, and other efficient cargo handling zones.
Shenzhen Port
Shenzhen Port, located on the coastline of Shenzhen in Guangdong province, is renowned as one of the most dynamic and rapidly developing container ports globally. It plays a significant role in international trade and transportation. Approximately 40 shipping companies operate at Shenzhen Port, offering around 130 international container routes, highlighting the diversity of transportation activities. The port also accommodates a substantial number of container ships each month, ensuring the capability to handle large cargo volumes and meet market transportation demands.
Guangzhou Port
Guangzhou Port is a major container port, ranking fifth globally in 2018 with a handling capacity of 21.8 million TEUs. Located in Guangzhou city, Guangdong province, China, it has a significant historical role as one of the busiest seaports in China during various dynasties. Situated at the confluence of the East, West, and North Rivers, Guangzhou Port became a crucial transportation hub in the Yangtze River Delta. The port's infrastructure includes 4,600 port bridges, 133 buoys, and 2,359 anchorage areas, enabling the handling of large and diverse cargoes.
Qingdao Port
Qingdao Port, situated on the Yellow Sea coast near Qingdao city in Shandong province, is one of the busiest ports globally, ranking seventh in 2019 in total cargo throughput. Comprising four main areas, including container terminals and iron ore handling docks, Qingdao Port plays a crucial role in both container transportation and iron ore processing. Equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced loading and unloading equipment, the port efficiently handles large-scale cargo.
Tianjin Port
Tianjin Port, formerly known as Tanggu Port, is the largest port in Northern China, serving as the primary maritime gateway to Beijing. Located on the western coast of the Bohai Gulf, at the mouth of the Haihe River, Tianjin Port is the largest artificial port in China and one of the largest in the world. With an extensive land area, more than 31.9 km of coastline, and 151 production docks by the end of 2010, Tianjin Port can handle a vast amount of cargo. In 2013, Tianjin Port processed 500 million tons of cargo and 13 million TEUs of containers, ranking fourth globally in cargo weight and ninth in container volume. It has trade connections with over 600 ports in 180 countries and territories worldwide, serving more than 115 regular container shipping routes.
Xiamen Port
Xiamen Port located on Haimen Island near the southern coast of Fujian province in China, is a significant deep-water port considered one of the key ports in the Asia-Pacific region. In 2013, Xiamen Port handled 191 million tons of cargo, including 8.08 million TEUs of containers. It joined forces with the nearby port of Zhangzhou in 2010 to create the largest seaport system in Southeast China. Xiamen Port consists of twelve districts, serving over 50 countries through 68 shipping routes and contributing to the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road. It plays a crucial role in international trade and connects major economic regions. These major seaports in China not only serve as international trade hubs but also play vital roles in the economic and commercial development of the country. With their scale and modern infrastructure, these ports significantly contribute to the import and export of goods and global market connections.
